T1D- Blood glucose levels should be monitored pre-, during and post- exercise

Evidence Summary

A 2021 consensus statement on post exercise recovery in a type 1 diabetic endurance athlete reports that athletes should prioritise maintaining blood glucose within target ranges during the post exercise period. This paper is self-reported to contain the opinions of authors due to the lack of studies/reported evidence. [1]

Grade – C –  A consensus basis backed by limited space trial data with self reported opinions from authors

Recommendation – 1

Conclusion

There are very few negatives to be taken from suggesting that athletes monitor their blood glucose closely either pre during or post exercise and maintaining optimum blood glucose levels is a mainstay of type one diabetic treatment therefore recommending that athletes maintain target ranges is a reasonable recommendation.
