T1D-Anaerobic exercise requires no adaptation of insulin or carbohydrate intake to mediate hypoglycaemic episodes

Evidence Summary

A 2017 literature review concluded that anaerobic exercise can be associated with a short-term increase in blood glucose and hypoglycaemia can occur during the recovery period following exercise. No adjustment of insulin dose is needed for this type of exercise. [1]

Grade – C –  Limited information was available on the number of papers included in the literature review or the exact data pulled from these papers

Recommendation – 2  With limited information on the power of the evidence this conclusion is based on it is hard to comment on the reliability of this recommendation

Conclusion

Patient should be recommended to monitor blood glucose closely post exercise of any form regardless of Arabic or anaerobic and titrate their own insulin regimes  as required .
